50/50 (2011) - dir. Jonathan Levine
Smartly written, beautifully acted, and far too forgettable. It’s a great script. You’re bound to laugh, cry, and tear up. Joseph Gordon-Levitt makes his character so likable, that it’s hard not to care. Anna Kendrick is, once again, flawless. But, most impressive, is Seth Rogen. Perhaps its because the character of Kyle is more 80/20 than he is 50/50 (eighty percent comedy, twenty percent drama).
But Jonathan Levine’s shot structure ruins this film’s chance of being great. The transitions are awful. It’s a difficult thing, to place blame on a young director (especially when he’s directing his own script) but the film ultimately suffers because of his lack of experience. Still - a surprisingly heartwarming buddy comedy, that aims to tug on the heartstrings and tickle the funny bone… and it succeeds on both fronts.
7.9
seriously one of the best movies I’ve ever watched.
